ROCKY MOUNTAIN SLED DOG CLUB – Saturday and Sunday during Noon Hour
SPECIAL DEMONSTRATION – Saturday and Sunday during the Noon Hour
It is our distinct pleasure to welcome the Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club to the Meeker Classic. The Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club was initially formed in the winter of 1960-61 by a small group of Siberian Husky and Samoyed owners who wanted to preserve the working traits of their breeds. The club now promotes the art and joy of mushing through sprint racing events and training opportunities for all experience levels and breeds of dogs. Depending on the season, events include bikejor, canicross, scooter, rigs, fat bike bikejor, skijor, and dogsledding. RMSDC is dedicated to preserving the sport for future generations, fostering camaraderie, ensuring responsible care and treatment of dogs, and celebrating the amazing relationship between canine athletes and their owners. Want to have more fun with your dog? You can explore www.rmsdc.org for race schedules, fun runs, and training opportunities. You can also get involved in their mentorship program or come to an event to talk with a musher. They have members with over 25 years of experience who love to talk about their dogs and help beginners. All are welcome.

Professional K9 handlers who work in law enforcement and the military developed a new companion dog sport, so that our pet dogs can use their amazing talent to find a specific scent. Our companion dogs learn to find the specific scent in 4 elements including Containers, Vehicles, Interiors and Exteriors.

WESTERN BORDER COLLIE RESCUE
Demonstrations and Education Programs on-going at their Booth – right across from the Information Booth
Saturday and Sunday
Western Border Collie Rescue is an all-volunteer organization working in and around the Rocky Mountain region. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home Border Collies that have been abandoned, neglected or are no longer able to remain in their current home. WBCR also works to educate the public on the characteristics and needs of Border Collies.
WBCR is not a facility open to the public; instead, the dogs are fostered at individuals’ homes. Appointments to meet a dog must be made in advance and only AFTER the application, approval, and a matching process has been completed. Please see our Adopt page to see how the adoption process works.
WBCR operates from donations and adoption fees to defray the cost of vet expenses, the time and money expended in foster care, food, phone calls and transports. Most of our volunteers work full-time jobs and foster Border Collies as a true labor of love. Please keep this in mind when you begin the application process. The process may take a week or so to get underway. Please be patient!
Meeker FFA Chapter – LEARNING, COMMUNICATING AND BUILDING OUR FUTURE LEADERS
There’s no better way to learn about farm life than by seeing farm animals first hand. The Meeker High School FFA Chapter will host a petting farm at the Meeker Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Their mission is “outreach” to educate the public on animal husbandry and offer an opportunity for spectators to meet and greet farm animals .
The chapter members have coordinated and developed a great program for you. We thank all the Meeker FFA Chapter members for their partnership in this program.
Additionally, each year the Rangely and Meeker Chapters of the FFA assist in the flag raising ceremony as part of the “Opening Cermonies” before the final round of competition on Sunday.
The FFA programs of Rio Blanco County are another example of hands on leadership training and taking pride in our agricultural heritage. Instructors are: Denee Chintala from Meeker High School and Clinton Kilduff from Rangely High School.
FLYBALL and AGILITY
Demonstrations at the Bill Lukes Field on Thursday, Friday and Saturday
Agility is a sport for dogs of all sizes, breeds, and temperaments, and handlers of all ages and abilities. Agility is basically an obstacle course with a variety of jumps, tunnels, weave poles and other obstacles that the dog must successfully navigate, much like steeplechase events for horses. One interesting fact about agility is that the dogs will compete on a half dozen courses with different layouts and obstacles in a day, and the dog will not have seen the actual course before running it. Agility is a wonderful activity for all types of dogs and dog owners, whether or not they are interested in competing and regardless of age. Border collies and other herding dogs are favorites, but by no means are they the only breeds that you will see compete successfully.
