Reserve Champions – 2014 Meeker Classic
Scott Glen & Don, 7 year old Male

New Dayton, AB CANADA

Running in the 11th slot of the 12 finalists in the heat of the afternoon, on Sunday of the 2014 Meeker finals, Scott and Don delivered a solid performance to get them Reserve Champion honors.  Both dog and handler are veteran competitors of the Meeker Classic.  Scott won the 2005 Meeker Classic with Pleat and has placed several times since then.

Don was the 2013 USBCHA National Champion and the father of the 2013 Meeker Reserve Champion, June.  Don’s father is an Irish import, also named, Don, and his mother is a 3 time USBCHA champion named Star.  Scott bought Don when he was 16 weeks old and, although he usually leaves the puppy raising to his wife Jenny, he had a feeling about Don and made him his buddy right from the start.  Don was both the Canadian Nursery Champion and the Canadian Champion as well as the USBCHA nursery Champion and the USBCHA Champion.  He’s always been a very steady dog and is the same dog working hair sheep in the East as hi is working the wily ranch sheep of Meeker.  Scott and Don ran the highest preliminary score at Meeker in 2011 and again in 2013.

Scott Glen grew up on a cattle ranch in Southern Alberta, Canada.  His family always had ranch dogs around but they weren’t expected to help much with the stock work.  When he was in his early twenties, he decided to start raising sheep.  Scott attended a sheep convention where he was planning to learn how to shear but got distracted by a sheepdog herding demonstration.  He never made it to the shearing class but he has been hooked on herding ever since.  Scott has been training border collies to herd sheep and cattle for over 20 years now and made it a full time profession in 1997.  He and his wife Jenny manage their kennel, Alta-Pete Stock Dogs (named after his family’s Scottish clan motto).  Alta-Pete means “Aim High”.  Most winters they can be found on their Alberta ranch where Scott trains sheep herding dogs for customers.  They spend two month each spring trialing and giving clinics and then summer time finds them getting ready for the fall trials.  During the fall, they’re back on the road trialing again at Soldier Hollow, Meeker and the National Finals.

In 2014 Scott enjoyed a friendly rivalry with Ron Enzeroth.  At that year’s Soldier Hollow, Scott won with another Don daughter, Bliss, and Ron and Mick were reserve champions.  That was followed up at Meeker with Ron and Mick winning and Scott and Don in Reserve.  They carried their fun into the National finals, where Scott and Don were reserve champions and Ron and Mick were 3rd.  This is a wonderful example of the respect and friendship that exists between the many handlers that compete at the Meeker Classic.  Scott and Jenny enjoy coming to Meeker each year and consider the trial a great test for both dog and handler.  Unfortunately we won’t get to see them in 2015 – they were both unable to attend. We’ll miss you!
