Big crowds, hot weather and lots of fun marked the 27th Annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials. A full slate of vendors, educational exhibits and demonstrations, good food and activities topped by a world class art show added to the success of the event.

At center stage were the dogs and their handlers. The competition was tough and so were the sheep. Battling terribly hot temperatures and sheep that tested and pushed the dogs to the limit – 125 dogs went to the post for the preliminaries. The 30 top preliminary scores advanced to the Semi-Finals on Saturday, Sept 7th – that saw a day of successful runs, high scores and a bit more moderate temperatures. The top nine scores of the day were 87 and above, with Don Helsley and The Wizard placing highest in the semi-finals with a score of 96.

The top 12 scoring dog/handler teams advanced to the finals on Sunday for the culmination of the competition. Dennis Gellings and his 3 Year-old Tess ran first of the day with a score of 139 points and remained on top. Scott Glen and ran a close 2nd with a 138.5 and the other scores followed. There were triumphs and disappointments yet each handler exhibited true stockmanship and grace throughout the day.
