Campbell Hansmire Sheep Operation

Randy Campbell & Julie Hansmire run their Campbell Hansmire Sheep Operation in Colorado and Utah.  Randy and Julie’s family and sheep run in Eagle County, Colorado during the summer and fall months.  In the 1930’s and 1940’s Eagle County was  a mecca for sheep.   Now however,  Campbell Hansmire Sheep is  just one of  a couple range (herded, no fences) sheep operations left Eagle County.   Randy and Julie’s sheep run in various locations…  from Eagle to the high alpine terrain of  Vail Pass.the Hansmire-Campbell Ranch: the family horseback with their sheep and their dogs

Their winter range is located North of  Cisco, Utah.  The  family’s headquarters lie at the base of the Bookcliff Range  at the historically known Cottonwood Ranch.  During non-drought years, ewes are lambed on the range along live creeks of the high desert.  However, during recent drought years, at least the twin-bearing ewes have come into a shed in Mesa County, Colorado, for lambing.  Campbell Hansmire ewes have recently improved their wool quality with John Jewell merino rams for increased wool length, density and yield.

Randy & Julie have long relied on their Akbash Guard Dogs for predator control.  Their Akbash dogs give much needed relief and peace of mind in keeping their flock members alive.  A business of raising & placing guard dogs and assisting other ranchers in the use of Guard Dogs has naturally complemented their everyday tasks.

Randy & Julie have two children, a son Lynn (age 16) and daughter Clay (11).     It’s a family operation, and everyone does their part.  Most of the work in the spring, summer and fall is done on horseback.     In fact, Randy wears out a saddle every four years in his tireless adventures on horseback.   Lynn loves team-roping and very active in his Fruita Monument High School FFA Chapter.  Clay enjoys showing her horse at local horse shows and rodeos along with tending to her musical talents, playing the violin and piano.   Julie has been active with Wool Grower Association activities, as past-president of the Colorado Wool Growers Association and serving on various local and national sheep-related Boards.

Randy & Julie will supply 700 yearling range ewes for the 2006 Meeker Classic.  The yearlings will come directly from their summer permit (near Vail)  to the Meeker where they will match wits with some 120 of the nation's top border collies competing at the Meeker Classic.
